Purlemley Eveline Byrom
1844 to 1917 , Tennessee, Illinois, Washington

The research to trail this ancestor through the census and other online records has been one of the most challenging of all of the people I have searched for. Her name changed many times. Her lack of literacy seems to have made the searches even more complicated but her survival of William M Shasteen, Leroy Wheeler, and John Cook and her final marriage to Ingram Mayberry made the adventure move from Tennessee to Illinois to Washington State quite an interesting ride.

Found her first in the 1850 Census living with her parents and siblings in Franklin County, Tennessee where she was born (according to some researchers she may have been born in Tullahoma, Coffee Co., TN). Her father was James Rodney Byrom but in 1850 he was listed as John R Byrom age 27 born in Tennessee. He was married to Cynthia Elizabeth Jones who was 25 years old and born in Alabama. Purlemley Eveline was listed as Penelope E age 7. Her sister was Nancy age 2.

Found a Tennessee marriage record that indicates she married William M Shasteen on 23 Sep 1856 where she is listed as Polina E. Byrom married in Franklin County. She would have been 13 years old and a few months if her birth date of May 18, 1843 is correct.

Found her in 1860 Census in Franklin County Tennessee near the Hurricane Post Office with William M Shasteen age 21. She is listed as P. E. Shasteen age 17 in this census. My great grandmother Cynthia Elizabeth Shasteen is also listed as 1 year old.

Next, found William Shasteen and his five brothers all joined the Confederate Army and eventually several were killed in action. William and his brother Elijah switched sides and fought for the Union after the Battle of Stones River. According to the book "The Ancestors and Descendents of William Shasteen, SR. 1786 - 1841 of Franklin County, Tennessee" by Joy Quandt Gallagher, William and Elijah were later killed by their Confederate neighbors in raids. William died of a wound in his face. He is buried in Nashville in the National Cemetery Dec 1864.

Purlemly Shasteen and her children moved with her parents to Moultrie Co., Illinois shortly after the close of the Civil War. As Union sympathizers they were not well received in their old Tennessee community. It seems that William and Elijah Shasteen lead several raids against the Confederate families and were considered "Bushwackers."

Found in Illinois Marriage Record that Purlemley Shasteen married Leroy Wheeler on 23 Apr 1867 in Moultrie County. She had a daughter Louisa (Lydia J Wheeler) from that marriage and Leroy died in 31 May 1889 in Macon County, Illinois. They had separated and divorced Posibly final in early 1876. From the Illinois death index: WHEELER, LEROY S 1889-05-31 PLEASANT VIEW TWP 68 YR M 1 184 2400 MACON, IL

In 1870 census, found Purlemley living next door to her parents in Moultrie County, Illinois. She is listed as Polina A Shasteen age 25 with daughter Catherine age 11 (Cynthia Elizabeth Shasteen), son John D age 8 and daughter Louisa (Lydia J Wheeler) age 4. Her daughter Sarah Ellen Shasteen age 7 is living next door with her parents James R Byrom and Cynthia Catherine with her brothers James L and John W Byrom.

Illinois Marriage records next show her marrying John Cook in Moultrie County on 23 Dec 1877. John Cook had been married before a couple of times and had children living with him and Purlemley in 1880 that are too old to be her children by that marriage.

1880 Census shows the Cook family living in Marrowbone Township, Moultrie County, Illinois. John Cook is listed as 42 years old born in Illinois. Purlemley is listed as Eveline age 37. Children are Luella age 13, Emma age 11, Alice age 9, Rosa age 7, John W age 5, Gracie age 3, Tracie age 3 and Lillie age 1. John's mother Elizabeth Cook is age 83 and Lydia J Wheeler is age 12.

Next record is John Cook's death in Moultrie County 17 Feb 1886. John and Purlemley had Della May "Lillie" b. 1879, Nancy Pearl b. 1880, Mary Eliza b. 1883 and Arthur C Cook b. 1885.

Purlemley Cook's marriage to Ingram Mayberry 27 Feb 1889 was found in Moultrie Co., IL. We find them in Mt Hope Township, Spokane, Washington in the 1900 Census. Ingram J Mayberry is listed as Ingren Mabery age 57, Erlemley age 67 wife and Leonard Mabery b. Aug 1886. Leonard is listed as born in Illinois parents born in North Carolina. Ingraham born in North Carolina and Erlemley born in Tennessee. So Leonard is from a previous marriage to Mary J Younger.

In 1910 Census, found her again in Mount Hope, Spokane, Washington with Ingram Mayberry. She is listed as Tremley Mayberry born in 1844 in Tennessee.

In 1917 she is found in the Mount Hope Cemetery Records. http://www.interment.net/data/us/wa/spokane/mthope/mt_hope.htm
