Dorothy Ann Gardner, 83, of Cascade Avenue, passed away at her home on Saturday evening, August 15, 2020, under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Peggy and Gary Hirschey of Lowville; Judy and Ray Spann of Port Leyden; Joanne Gardner of Lowville; Rose and James “Todd” Baker of Lowville; Sue and Clark Jr. “Butch” Miller of Turin; Fred Gardner and his companion Stephanie Kirkbride of Glenfield; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a half-sister Doreen Ploude of Massena; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorothy is predeceased by her husband, Frederick A. Gardner who passed away on August 1, 1984; three sons, Frederick Jr. and Robert, who died in infancy and Gerald “Jerry” Gardner; two grandchildren, Sallyann Bender and John Hirschey; her sister Mary Grossniklaus; and three brothers, Gilbert, Jay and Albert Barrigar.
Dorothy was born on January 22, 1937 in Pierrepont, NY, a daughter of the late John C. and Annabelle Brayton Barrigar. She attended school in Potsdam. On June 20, 1954 she married Frederick A. Gardner at Waddington Methodist Church with Rev. John A. Clark officiating. She worked at the tree nursery, ran the sale barn diner and together with her husband, the couple owned and operated a dairy farm on the West Road in the Town of Martinsburg for many years. She loved putting together puzzles, outdoor activities, and her cat Velvet. Most of all she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always gave everyone a hug & kiss and said she loved us before she left or said goodbye on the phone.
Burial in Lowville Rural Cemetery; Pastor Evan Zehr officiated.
