Mary Lynn Hooper, 72 years old, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, went home to glory on August 11, 2020 at 3:17 a.m at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital.

She was born in Sunflower County, Mississippi to Paumper Hooper and Bettie (Pernell) Kirkwood on October 16, 1947.

Mary accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized in the Mississippi River. Mary loved to sing. She was a member of the Rose of Sharon Choir. Mary wrote the song “A Letter to His Wife”, she loved and wrote poetry and she also wrote several articles for The Informer in St. Louis, MO. Mary served on several different committees. She was on several committees which included the African American Heritage Committee, Rural Gang Intervention, Low Vision Group of Southern Illinois and the Jefferson County Housing Rehabilitation Committee. She put together many programs in the community but she loved putting the program together for the annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the residents at Spero. She was a member Antioch International Assemblies.

She leaves to carry on her legacy, three (3) daughters, Kym Hooper-Moore, Robyn Hooper, Dawn Hooper-Paulfrey; three (3) sons, Coria Hooper (Meka), Terrance Hooper (Banikka); Leslie (Patch) Hooper (Khahliah) all of Mt. Vernon, IL; Sister, Sarah Lockhart of Mt. Vernon, IL; Special Friend, Willie J. Cain of Mt. Vernon, IL,; Special Nephew, Confidant, and Adviser, Michael D. Kirkwood of Atlanta, GA; God Son, Carlos Burns; Special Daughters, Carolyn Sue Tyrone (Doggan); Jennifer Jones; Stephanie Brown; Rosie Moore; Sista-Girl Anne Gover; Special Friend, Mintha (Ms. Honey) Smith; Special Son, Brent Wittenbrink; Special Cousins Cora Ann Bell, Charles Bell (Gladys); Coffee Buddy and Nephew, Tyrone (Professa) Lockhart; Anna Mae Hooper Debro; Lawrence Hooper; Janice Hooper, Ron Smith, Barbara Thompson and Veronica Hall Smith.

Mary loved her children with all of her heart and was proud of their accomplishments. She loved her family. Her main purpose was the unification of family through birthday gathering, holidays, phone calls, visits, texts and she was learning how to communicate via social media. She had an enormous love for everyone and she embraced life to the fullest.

Mary was proceeded in death by both of her parents; daughters, Betty Hooper (Powe) and Paula Hooper; Sisters, Gloria Jean Kirkwood, Laura Davis, Wanita Williams; Brothers, Rufus Hooper, Wesley B, Ollie Lee and Osie Williams (Twins).

A Visitation will be held Saturday, August 22, 2020 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Antioch International Assemblies Church (228 South 9th Street) in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Apostle Timothy Brinson and Deaconess Dawn Hooper Paulfrey officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois.
