William Davidson was appointed a Wilmington, DE Police Patrolman in 1893. He went on to serve the dept until retirement in 1941. Due to his large size (over 6 feet) Ptlm. Davidson was assigned to the toughest area of the city. This area was known as "The Coast" and Ptlm. Davidson worked this beat for 20 years. In July 1915, Ptlm. Davidson was shot twice while breaking up a fight. At the time of his shooting, doctors hopes for his recovery were low as one bullet had pierced his intestines in 10 places. Ptlm. Davidson had to endure five surgeries to correct the damage. Ptlm. Davidson recovered and served a total of 48 years before retiring. His son William Jr. went on to become a Delaware State Trooper.
