George Cunningham Newman, 91, of Shelby, NC passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Hospice Wendover. He was born on August 2, 1929 in Columbia, SC to the late Charles and Mattie Mattox Newman.

Mr. Newman graduated Columbia High School before attending Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer University in 1957 as well as a Bachelor of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1960. He pastored several Baptist churches in Georgia before moving to Shelby, NC in the early 1960’s. He received a Master of Arts degree from Appalachian State University. He served as Director of Community Organization of Drug Abuse Prevention (CODAP) as well helping promote Shelby to later receive it’s All American City status. He was also active in several civic organizations and clubs. He went on to found George Newman Construction, which he ran until retiring.

During his lifetime in Shelby he remained active in Central United Methodist Church where he enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years. He was a life-long follower of Christ. His main passion was his family. He coached many little league sports teams and enjoyed gardening. He will be remembered for his calm demeanor and quick wit.

George was preceded in death by brothers Coleman, Douglas and James as well as sisters Mary Ellen, Ruby, Sarah, Dorothy and Francis.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Gloria Putnam Newman, daughters Emily Gordon (Ron) of Jefferson, GA, Jeanne Brandon (Ken) of Mooresville and son Jason (Kristen) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren Josh, Jeanette, Jodi, Jamie, Byers and Georgia Grace, as well as 5 great grandchildren.

Due to COVID-19 the family will be holding a private funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 East Marion Street, Shelby, NC 28150 or Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
