David Edward Schmidt was born on September 26, 1947 in Los Angeles, California, son of Delmar Lewis Schmidt and Dorothy Emma Josephine (Logemann) Schmidt. He grew up in Oregon and Washington along with his brothers, Larry and Russell Schmidt. David served in Vietnam in the US Army, where he honed his mechanical skills. After getting out of the military, he worked in the aerospace industry, working for Lockheed Martin for many years. He married Holly Francisco and they had a daughter, Sunshine Heather Schmidt, in 1974. They later divorced. In 1978, David married Barbara Kelley in Las Vegas, Nevada and they lived in California until 1990, when they divorced and David moved back to Oregon to work for Rockwell Collins. David eventually had to stop working and go onto disability, and he spent the latter part of his life in Klamath Falls, Oregon, near his mother, Dorothy, who passed away in 2013. David passed away of heart failure on August 7, 2020, at age 72. In addition to being preceded in death by his mother, David was also preceded in death by his father Delmar in 1988, his half-brother John Joseph "Larry" Winstead (formerly Fox, and formerly Schmidt) in 1990, and his sister-in-law Eileen Joyce (Owens) Schmidt in 1998. David is survived by his daughter, Sunshine (Ron) Long of Florida; his 2 granddaughters Kaylee and Angelina; his brother, Russell Schmidt of Klamath Falls; his niece, Amy (Jason) Ray of California; his aunts, Lorraine Logemann Lang of Forest Grove, and Beverly Logemann of California; and many cousins and friends. There will not be a formal funeral. His cremains will be interred in Eagle Point National Cemetery with a color guard ceremony.
