December 05, 1933 - August 13, 2020

Alice Ann (Acton) Strange, 86, of Loogootee, passed away peacefully at 2:35 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at the Loogootee Healthcare and Rehab Center.

Alice was born December 5, 1933 in Loogootee, Indiana to Wilfred James Acton and Florence Lucille (Borders) Acton. She married Timothy Joseph Strange Jr. on February 28, 1953 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Loogootee, Indiana.

Alice was a lifelong resident of Loogootee. She was a full-time wife, mother and grandmother, loved taking care of her home, and being involved in her community. Before she married, she worked as a telephone operator following in the footsteps of her aunt (Birdie Summers) and grandmother (Martha Borders). She also worked part-time at Midwest Printing and the Loogootee Tribune. She was part of a group of women who started the Girl Scout program and was a leader of Troop 141 for several years. She and her husband, Tim, were among the parents that started Pee Wee baseball in Loogootee, and actively supported the start-up and running of the Little League Baseball program as well. Also, along with Tim, other veterans and their families, she helped start and work the bingo at the VFW, where she later became a regular enthusiastic player. She was a member of and a participant in the Women’s Altar Society at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Whitfield. What she loved most was her family. Family gatherings and reunions were very special to her, and she loved to play cards and games and to share stories and photos about family and local history.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Timothy Strange in 2017; her parents Wilfred and Lucille Action; her siblings Vernon Action, Virginia (Acton) Love, Doris (Acton) Risacher, and Donald Acton; and her grandson, Christopher Luke Strange.

Alice is survived by her five children, Deb Strange of Phoenix, AZ; Brenda Maule (Mike) of Washington, IN; Jackie Strange of Ellettsville, IN; Tim Strange (Shelley Coffman) of Waynesville, OH; and Pat Strange (Denise) of Loogootee, IN; along with nine grandchildren, Neal (Rachel) Strange, Sean (Kristin) Dixon, Jonathon Costello, Matt Maule, Brian Maule, Ally Strange, Liz Strange and Maddie Strange; and four great- grandchildren Henry and Olivia Strange, and Marshall and June Dixon. She also has a big extended family with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Very Rev. J. Kenneth Walker at 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2020 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Loogootee. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
