Lorraine passed away November 15, 2016 in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. She was born on August 16, 1923 in Morristown, New Jersey to the late Elwood and Gertrude Outwater. She was raised on Long Island; she graduated from Northport High School in June 1941. In July 1941, she went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in New York City in their Reservation Bureau and commuted 4 hours a day.

In October 1941, she met the "love of her life" on her train. Gus Newman was the Conductor that day. War was declared December of 1941 and Gus was drafted in March 1942. In 1944, Gus and Lorraine were married. The war was over in 1945; Gus came home and went back to work on the Long Island Railroad and Lorraine became a housewife, a role she dearly loved.

She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron of Suwassett Chapter #407 of Port Jefferson, New York and was a member of the order for 74 years. She also was a very proud member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) for 40 years.

Each day was very special to her as she would do her crossword puzzles, either read about or watch baseball games and keep up with horse racing. She had a vast knowledge of them all. She was a huge fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Mets. She loved going to the games at the Saint Lucie West stadium.

Her husband passed away after 38 years of marriage in 2002, and upon his death, she sold her home and relocated to Port Saint Lucie, Florida.

She transferred her memberships to Florida and was a member of Eastern Star Ruth Chapter #7 in Fort Pierce and the DAR Halpatiokee Chapter in Stuart.

In 1995, an Amaranth Court was formed in Stuart, Florida and she became a charter and life member of this Masonic-affiliated order too.

She was a member of First Congregational Church in Port Saint Lucie and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor in 2016.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Leslie Borchert (Rob) of Vero Beach, Florida, and Adrienne "Pinky" Newman (Glenys) of Melbourne, Australia; six grandchildren: Christian, Donald, Timothy, Brian, Stephen and Sally; eleven great grandchildren: Andrew, Hudson, August, Jackson, Avery, Dawson, Rose, Evelyn, Mamie, Colette, Marley; and beloved nephews: Jimmy (Pat), Frankie (Marie), Paul (Maureen), Larry (Diane).

A viewing will be held Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. until the service time of 3:00 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Port Saint Lucie Chapel.

Burial will take place Monday, November 21, 2016 alongside her beloved husband in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Port Jefferson, New York.

For those who wish, donations in Lorraine's honor may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, 5090 Dunn Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981, Cystic Fibrosis (Team Mamie) and Diabetes Research.
