Philip “Jerry” Lewis was born on August 5, 1947 to the union of Gladys Green and Wayman Ricks in Woodsboro, Texas.
Philip “Jerry” Lewis received his formal education at Woodsboro High School in Woodsboro, Texas. He furthered his education at Compton College in Compton, California where he received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice while serving in the United States Army.
Philip accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age, and was united with New Light Baptist Church where he served as Head Deacon.
Philip Lewis was united in holy matrimony with Rose Marie Franklin on June 10, 2000 in Refugio, Texas.
Philip Lewis enlisted into the United States Army on October 17, 1967. He did a tour in Korea and fought in the Vietnam war. Philip was honorably discharged on August 17, 1970.
Philip was employed with the LAPD in the early 70s. He was employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and moved up the ranks quickly starting as a Correctional officer, then Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Major. Later he became a Grievance Supervisor in Beeville, Texas for many years before serving as Warden for Lopez and Segovia units in Edinburg, Texas. In all, Jerry dedicated 23 years of service in the Prison system before retiring.
Jerry was an avid Refugio Bobcats fan. He attended every football game from the 7th grade to varsity for 40 years including every State Championship game. Sometimes he could be found organizing a coach’s meeting in Stripes, and would sometimes even invite the high school coaches to sit down with him “if they were in Stripes purchasing something” to offer game advice. Jerry was also a loyal and devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. Jerry told the children growing up in his house that if they were not Cowboy fans, then they had to get out, so of course they were all Cowboy fans. Jerry enjoyed playing dominoes and giving advice to whomever would listen, and even the ones that wouldn’t. Jerry was a great inspiration to young people everywhere. Jerry loved all his family dearly and would do anything for them by any means necessary.
Jerry was a member of the Coastal Bend Brotherhood. He also held a seat on the board of the Refugio County Chamber of Commerce, and was a highly respected member of the Community Cemetery Association of Refugio, Texas.
