Charlie B. Hildebrand, 88, passed away surrounded by family December 8, 2017, after a period of declining health.
The son of the late John S. Hildebrand and Mammie Childers Hildebrand, he was born on February 28, 1929, in Burke County. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and seven sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nell Berry Hildebrand, of the home, and three sons: Wendell Hildebrand and wife, Bonnie, of Hildebran; Barry Hildebrand and wife, Melanie, of Hildebran; and Scott Hildebrand and wife, Mandy, of Hickory; four grandchildren, Connor, Lydia, Erin and Riley; sister Faye Hildebrand Asherbraner and her husband John of Hickory; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The history of his family is lengthy in Burke County, with him being the sixth generation. The Town of Hildebran was named to honor his great-uncle Jake Hildebrand, an owner of an early industry in the area. He graduated from Hildebran High School in 1949, and attended Gardner-Webb College and Lenoir-Rhyne College. He served in the US Army as a Military Policeman and served in Korea. He retired from General Electric in Conover in the 1990's. After retirement, he remained active, volunteering for the Town of Hildebran and the East Burke Community. He was heavily involved in the construction of the Hildebran – Icard community pool and was the founder of the East Burke Community Library, now named the C.B. Hildebrand Public Library, in his honor. He was a member of the Republican Party and the precinct chairman for Icard #3 for many years. He was also involved in the election of numerous local and state officials. He was a long-time member of Abee's Grove Baptist Church in Valdese where he served as a Deacon, Sunday-school teacher and other offices in the church.
