Hall of Fame College Football Coach. During his twenty-five season tenure as head coach at the University of Houston (1962 to 1986), he guided the Cougars to four conference titles and two Cotton Bowl victories. He attended Texas A&M and played the center position on the school's football squad, prior to transferring to West Point. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War and following his return home, he began his lengthy coaching career, initially as an assistant at Michigan State University in 1954. He succeeded Hal Lahr as head coach of the University of Houston Cougars and went on to compile a 160 win, 108 loss and 8 tie record. He was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. He died of complications from pneumonia and kidney disease.
