Professional Football Player. For seven seasons (1964 to 1970), he played at the guard position in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. Born Howard Edward Mudd, he excelled in field and track and football during his years at Midland High School in Michigan. He played collegiate football at Michigan State University, prior to being selected by the San Francisco 49ers during the 9th round of the 1964 NFL Draft. He totaled 93 regular season games and during the course of his career, he distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors three-times and All-Pro status once. Mudd was named to the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team. After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy coaching career as an offensive lines coach, initially with the university of California from 1972 until 1973. He returned to the professional ranks with the San Diego Chargers (1974 to 1976) and had stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. He coached Indianapolis's offensive unit under head coach Tony Dungy and quarterback Peyton Manning during the Colts Super Bowl championship season of 2006. He died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
