SHREVEPORT - Victor F. Matthews, Jr., known to friends and family as "Buddy", passed away on September 15, 2018, at the age of 88 years old. Visitation was held on September 19, 2018 at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home, followed by a graveside burial at Forest Park East Cemetery, Shreveport, LA.
Buddy was born in Shreveport to Victor and Vivian Matthews on April 10, 1930. He graduated from Byrd High School, where he was an Eagle Scout. He attended La Tech University before joining the Navy. Buddy was a Veteran of the Korean War. In 1954 he married Beverly Ann Beard of Jonesville, LA; they raised their three children, Scott, Beth and Vic in Monroe, LA where he worked for United Gas. After returning to Shreveport, he continued working for United Gas for more than 30 years before retiring. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and camping with his family. Buddy always enjoyed watching football, especially the New Orleans Saints. He loved the outdoors and working in his yard. He always had a garden full of vegetables and a yard full of flowers. Buddy especially enjoyed growing orchids in his greenhouse.
Buddy is preceded in death by his parents Victor F. Matthews, Sr. and Vivian Bullard Matthews, and by his wife of more than 50 years, Beverly Beard Matthews.
He is survived by his brother, Don R. Matthews and sister-in-law Kathy Matthews of Alpharetta, GA; son, Dr. Scott Matthews and wife Cherrie of Shreveport, LA; daughter, Beth Matthews Sylvestri and husband Nick of Monroe, LA; and son Vic Matthews and wife Karyn of Monroe, LA; eight grandchildren, Ryan Matthews and Rachael Wood of Shreveport, LA, Stacie Yerger, Stephanie Blackmon, Shellie Sylvestri, Jim Matthews, John Matthews and Jake Matthews of Monroe, LA; six great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
