Ella's parents moved to California when she was a little girl. She graduated from Watsonville, California High School in 1949. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She also worked as a secretary at Richland Hills Elementary for a number of years before helping in the family business, Lee's Western Wear. After several years in the retail business, they moved to Lubbock, where she helped her husband in the insurance business. After retiring from the insurance business, she babysat numerous children who lovingly referred to her as "Grandma."
Ella is proceeded in death by her husband Lee, her parents, Charles and Dora, her twin sister, Stella Hilliker of California, eight half siblings, and son-in-law, Larry Herrera.
Ella's survivors include her three daughters; Debbie Herrera of Lubbock, Texas, Sandy James and husband, Jody of Lubbock, Texas, Fran Hamilton and husband Royce, of Muleshoe, Texas; 4 grandsons; John and Kevin Herrera of Lubbock, Texas, Evan James of Lubbock, Texas and Eric James of Oklahoma; 2 granddaughters, Hailey Jones and husband Dustin of Lubbock, Texas and Coralie James of Lubbock, Texas; and 2 great-grandchildren, Layla and Lee Herrera of Phoenix.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave. Seventh Floor, New York, NY 10001.
