Ledford "Cowboy" Stokes, 85, of Lubbock died Aug. 22 in Vista Care Hospice Inpatient Unit. Services were Aug. 27 in Lakeridge Baptist Church. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Park.
Cowboy was born July 8, 1922 in Childress, Texas to L.J. and Ethel Myers Stokes. He graduated from New Deal High School in 1941 and served in WWII from 1944-46. Cowboy and his wife had lived in Ruidoso for many years as owners of Sherwood Forest, Whispering Pines Restaurant and the Ranch House before retiring in 1999. He was a faithful member of Lakeridge Baptist Church. He married Joe Ann Yates, March 6, 1952 in Lubbock. She preceded him in death April 18, 1998. A son, Terry Stokes, also preceded him in death in 1997.
Survivors include his daughter Pat Webb of Lubbock and a son, Mike Crumley, of Bangs, Texas; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
