Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. He graduated from United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1836 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd United States Artillery Regiment. He fought in Florida during the Indian Wars, and during the Mexican War he was cited for bravery at the Battle of Buena Vista for leading his battery in a defensive action that stopped a Mexican attack, receiving brevet promotion to Major. He served in a variety of positions after the Mexican War, including expeditions against Native Americans in the Dakota Territory. At the start of the Civil War he received a commission as a Brigadier General of Volunteers, and commanded the ground forces that captured Port Royal, South Carolina in a combined Army-Navy effort. General Sherman briefly commanded the Department of the South, and then moved to the Western Theater, commanding a division during the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi. He lost a leg while commanding a division during the May, 1863 attack on Port Hudson, Louisiana and received brevet promotion to Major General to recognize his bravery. After his recovery he held several commands, including the division occupying New Orleans and the Department of the East, remaining in the Army until his 1870 retirement.
