Alexander, Irene M. died peacefully in her Parkwater home on the morning of June 24, 1999. Irene May Ponto was born in Spokane on May 1, 1914, the eldest of three children of Grace and Theodore Ponto. As a teenager she helped raise her younger siblings and in her free time began singing in the choir. She met Robert Vernon Alexander while enjoying summer holidays at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They married in 1932.

Together they moved into the Alexander homestead house in the Spokane Valley, which remained Irene's home until her death. While Robert worked on the railroad, Irene raised four children. However her interests led her beyond the boundaries of home. She was active at her church and contributed her time and energy to the Mission Society. She was a founding member of the women's ETC club, enjoyed collecting and served as officer for a number of organizations. She loved gardening and countless varieties of colorful irises still spring up in her backyard annually. Turning her gardening interests to wider use, she served as a leader of the local 4-H club.

As retirees, Robert and Irene traveled together to Europe and around North America. Almost every year they went on photographic journeys or took a trip up to the family's favorite fishing spot, Kootenay Lake in British Columbia. Irene remained active after Robert passed away in 1980; she traveled to Switzerland, Australia and Alaska. Even when she became increasingly housebound, she still managed to attend most of the monthly ETC meetings. She was an avid reader throughout her life and enjoyed every opportunity to learn about current events and to improve her vocabulary. On May 1, 1999, about 100 family and friends gathered at the Centenary United Methodist Church to visit with Irene and to wish her a happy 85th birthday.

She is survived by sons, Verne of Petaluma, CA, Kenneth of Lewiston, ID, David of Spokane, WA; daughter, Jean Sack of Baltimore, MD; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Cecil Johnson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their descendants.

Memorial service Tuesday, June 29, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1012 S. Freya, Pastor Brenda Tudor officiating. Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, South, 421 S. Division Street in charge of cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church. The Spokesman-Review, 27 June 1999, Sunday
