TURNED ON GAS BY MISTAKE

ED. EARL, A WELL KNOWN
CIVIL WAR VETERAN

ASPHYXIATED SATURDAY NIGHT

Found Dead in Bed at the Home
of Dave Billette at 9 O'Clock
Yesterday Morning

Edward Earl, the Civil War veteran
who arrived here last Saturday on fur-
lough from the National Soldiers' Home
at Marion, Ind., was found dead in bed
at the home of Dave Billette yesterday
morning. Mr. Earl had evidently turned
on the gas when intending to turn off
the electric light in his room, with the
result that he was asphyxiated. When
Mr. Billette went to Mr. Earl's room to
awaken him, he discovered that the
room was filled with gas, and that the
occupant of the room was dead. When
he showed Mr. Earl to the room Satur-
day night, Mr. Billette turned on the
electric lights and called the attention
of the former to the fact that it was a
combination gas and electric fixture
but that the family did not use the gas
for lighting purposes.

Before retiring Saturday night, Mr.
Earl placed a check for $40 and about
$20 in cash in Mr. Billette's keeping,
saying that he would want it in the
morning as he intended to leave for
Michigan City, to visit his son, Will.

A coroner's jury was impannelled
yesterday morning, and after the re-
mains were viewed and adjournment was
taken until this morning, when the in-
quest was held at the office of Atty. W.
N. Burns, and the following verdict
rendered:

"We, the jury, find that Edward Earl
came to his death by accidentally turn-
ing on the gas."

Mr. Earl was about 68 years old. He
was born and raised in Niles, where he
resided until a few years ago, when he
went to the Soldiers' Home. He served
during the Civil war as a member of
Company E., 12th Michigan Regiment.
For many years he was a member of
Frank Graves Post of this place. He
was a brick mason and plasterer by
trade.

Mr. Earl is survived by a son, Will
Earl of Michigan City, and a daughter,
Mrs. of Toledo, O.: also
four brothers, Bruce and Charles of
Niles; Daniel of Toledo, and Lawrence
of Watervliet.

The remains were removed to the un-
dertaking establishment of Paul Skalla.
Funeral arrangements have not yet
been made.
