SOUTHBURY — Ann Hinman Lilley passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on July 26, 2020.

Ann was born to Jane (Spader) Hinman and Edward Hinman Jr. in New York City on May 29, 1930. Later that year, the family took residence in the Southbury home built by their ancestor, Col. Benjamin Hinman, in 1742.

She grew up in Southbury, attended St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury, graduated from Garrison Forest School in Maryland and Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.
One of her most interesting experiences during her college years was volunteering with the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky, where she attended to the horses that carried nurses bringing health care to remote communities.

In 1951, she married the late Rutherford P. Lilley of Watertown, and they raised their three daughters in Woodbury. Ann was a lifelong community volunteer. Her most enjoyable memories were of the years she spent as an in-court volunteer for the Waterbury Probation Department, teaching third graders programs from Flanders Nature Center, and serving on the Woodbury Zoning Commission.

Ann enjoyed traveling and her happiest trips were to visit her children and grandchildren in upper state New York and Washington state. When at home, she enjoyed gardening, entertaining friends, playing bridge, knitting for her family, and sports.

Ann leaves behind her daughters, Jane, Andie and Margaret; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved very much.

Her family is forever grateful to her friends and the staff at Pomperaug Woods Health Center for their kindness, caring, love and support.

There will not be a memorial at this time, but if you wish, you may make a contribution in Ann’s name to Flanders Nature Center, P.O. Box 702, Woodbury, CT 06798.
