She was born to the late Floyd S. and Mary E. McCaughtry Hamilton on November 11, 1927, in what is now New Beaver Boro, Lawrence County. She graduated from Mount Jackson High School in 1945 and attended Geneva College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949.
From 1949 until the 1980s, Martha taught Latin, along with English and Social Studies, in several local school districts, in between the time off she took to have and raise her children.
She later served as a nursing assistant in two local care homes. Her heart for people was displayed in all her employment and in everything she did.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth J. Black, whom she married on December 22, 1951, and who went to his rest on June 23, 2007, and by three sisters, Jane M. Jackson, Helen R. Edwards, and Mary Lou Black, and a brother James R. Hamilton.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Ronald and Christy Black, Bonnie and Steve Steinman, Bette and Dennis Miller, and Daniel and Kim Black, four grandchildren, Jay (Rachel) and Kellie Black, and Noah (Lauren) and Ian Black, two great-grandchildren, Harper and Alexandra Black, two brothers, John W. (Alice) Hamilton and Paul C. Hamilton, two sisters, Mildred G. Steinecke and Alice D. Thompson, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Friday, August 14, from 2PM to 7PM at the Marion Hill Alliance Church. At the same location, an hour of visitation will be held at 10AM, Saturday, August 15, immediately followed by the funeral service at 11AM, with Pastor Roland M Gray III officiating. Interment will be in the Sylvania Hills Cemetery, next to her husband.
