Tommy G. James, 72, Kokomo, passed away at 7:05 am Friday, July 17, 2020, at his home. He was born April 19, 1948, in Harrisburg, Arkansas, the son of the late Avery & Marietta (Koonce) James. On June 30, 1973, he married Judith Mae Murphy who preceded him in death on October 26, 1995.

Tommy was a 1965 graduate of Paradise Valley High School in Arizona. He served with the United States Marines from 1968-1969 earning the rank of LCpl. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Rifle Marksman Badge. Tommy was a man of many talents from carpentry to cake decorating and everything in between. He loved telling stories and jokes, cooking and family gatherings. Tommy’s big passion was football, but most of all, the great love he had for his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews as if they were his own.

Tommy is survived by his children, Kim (Jeff) Zimmerman and Chuck (Jessica) Layton; grandchildren, Amanda (Aaron) Schrimshear, Stacey (Sean) Oakley, Cacey (Brian) Layton, Matt Layton, Adam Layton and Josh Layton; great-grandchildren, Jacob Allen Lee, Maeson James Smith, Rowan Anthony McCowan, Ezra Scott Keith, Leanna Gracelynn Spinner, and Landon John Charles Layton; siblings, Avery “Sonny” (Francis) James and Pat James Chelf Hendricks.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judith; siblings, Norma James Carson, Juanita James Worthy, Wanda James Woods, Mary Nell James Johnson, Cecil Marie James, Dickie Ray James, and Alvin Edward “Buzzy” James; and his beloved dog, Muff.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on September 5, 2020, please contact Kim at 765-416-2878 for details. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory assisted with cremation.
