James T. Norton was born in the province of Quebec, Canada, September 11,1850 the son of Arunah and Frances Gates Huntoon Norton. He resided at home until he was twenty-two years of age. He came to Iowa in 1873, and for two years filled the position of assistant bookkeeper in the master mechanic's office of The Illinois Central railway at Waterloo. September, 1875 he came to Newell, then in it's infancy, and purchased a grain business and conducted a warehouse in partnership with Harris & Parker for about two years. He next purchased a general store in partnership with John R. Welch, and they also bought and sold stock for six years. They also built one of the first creameries in the state. Later Mr. Norton purchased the interest of Mr. Welch in the store and continued the business alone for several years. After closing out his general merchandise business, he joined P.H.. Judge in purchasing an interest in the Parker bank, Mr. Harris having retired. The firm name was Parker, Judge & Norton. Several years later Judge and Norton purchased Mr. Parker's interest and the bank was the n conducted under the name of Judge & Norton. Several years after this change Mr. Norton bought Mr. Judge's interest and conducted the business successfully for a number of years under the name of the Bank of Newell. Last May the bank was reorganized as the Newell State Bank. Mr. Norton was one of the principal stockholders and was elected President of the bank, a position he was filling a t the time of his death On June 21, 1882, Mr. Norton was married to Miss Belle A. Miller, daughter of Honerable DeWitt C. and Agnes Lawson Miller. To this union three sons and four daughters were born, all of whom are living: Fannie A. DeWitt A., Ernest R., Ruth E., J. Edgar, Caroline an d Marian.
Of Mr. Norton's immediate family there are left to mourn the loss his devoted wife, three sons and four daughters, who are mentioned elsewhere in this article, two brothers and one sister, A. O Norton, E. V. Norton and Mrs. P. T . Baldwin, of Coaticook, Quebec, Canada besides many other relatives.
