SUSAN M. WOOD
Had Lived in the Township of Essex for Fifty-Four Years.

Susan M. Flanders, subject of this sketch, was born December 4, 1834, in Ontario county, New York. When about 13 years of age she came with her parents to Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

June 5th, 1853, she was united in marriage to Francis Wood. Nine years later she came to Essex, Clinton county. To this union were born six children. Francis J., Lucy A., Carrie C., William H., Ida M., and Esther A.

Three died in infancy and Carrie Wood Wardell, March 28th, 1897. Francis and Ida survive. Mr. Wood departed this life April 23, 1908.

Mrs. Wood was fourth in number of thirteen children of whom only three brothers remain, William of Grand Rapids, Nathan of Eaton Rapids, and David, of Tropico, Cal., Mrs. Wood was a loving wife and mother and although an invalid for many years was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. She was one of the oldest pioneers of Essex, having come here when Clinton county was a complete wilderness and red men plentiful. She experienced many hardships of early days. She departed this life, March 27th, 1916, age 81 years, three months and __ days. Besides a son and daughter, she leaves to mourn her death four grandchildren. Mrs. S. D. Clark, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. John Sillman, Essex; Mrs. R. H. Gorton, Howell and Ben Wardell of Lansing; also five great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held at the late home in Essex, Rev. J. W. Yantis of Maple Rapids officiating. The remains were laid to rest beside her husband in Beach cemetery.
