Shirley N. Rice of Newark, N.J., born September 23, 1943, passed on August 3, 2020.
Service will be held Monday, August 10, at 10 a.m., at Perry Funeral Home, 34 Mercer St., Newark. Walk Through is Sunday, August 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Perry's. Interment will be at Hollywood Memorial Park, Union, N.J.
Shirley was born in Little Rock, Ark. She was working as an administrator at the University of California-Berkeley when she met the future Senator Ronald L. Rice. Shirley was a well-respected higher education professional, especially at Essex County College, where she served as an administrator, and throughout the entire community.
Her cherished memory will always be in the hearts of her loving husband, Senator Ronald L. Rice of Newark; two stepchildren: son, Ronald C. Rice (wife, Libi Rice) and daughter, Yuki T. Rice; her only living sibling, Doris Mason; nieces and nephews, Dionne McKenzie, Montoya McGruder, Dedra Pearson, Myra Gunter, Miriam Skipper, Patrick Mason, Bobby Mason, Karlon McGruder, Roderick McGruder, Robert McGruder, Curtis McGruder and Harry Skipper; and a host of other relatives and friends, including a very special lifetime friend, Emma Ruth Rowland, of Little Rock, Ark.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Marian McGruder and Abe; and five siblings: Anna Skipper, Carolyn McGruder, Charles Paterson, Robert McGruder and Curtis McGruder.
Shirley will truly be missed by her family and the entire Essex County community.
