Mary was born in 1914 and was a teenager when her mother predeceased her in 1932, leaving 10 children. Mary, the eldest daughter, immediately set about raising the family, and has ever been the steadying force, the guiding light, and the unfaltering inspiration for all her siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends. Her family was gathered around her when she passed, and she will be dearly missed.
Mary was the owner of Mary H. Abdoo Fashions located on Main Street in Poughkeepsie, a business she started and ran for 55 years. She opened up the bridal shop with one dress in 1951, and built it to a successful business with her sisters and close family.
She was a devout parishioner of St. Mary's Church, and had been a member of the Parish Council. Mary also was a member of the Amerita Club, the Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Marist College Fashion Design Council.
Survivors include sisters, Gemile Marrone, Freda Abdoo, and Hannah Abdoo; brother, John Abdoo and his wife, Doris; brother-in-law, Carl Hoffmann; and sisters-in-law, Nance Abdoo and Helen Abdoo. Mary leaves a legacy of love with 22 nieces and nephews; and 22 great-nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her father, Assid Abdoo; her mother, Rumsa Soman Abdoo; her sister, Jean Abdoo Hoffmann; her brothers, Joseph Abdoo, James Abdoo, Fred Abdoo, and Albert Abdoo; and brother-in-law, Frank Marrone.
Family will receive their friends on Thursday, October 26, from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, October 27, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie.
