R.B. was the second of five children, he was born in his parents’ home in Selman City. He grew up with his parents and siblings on the oil lease in East Texas where his dad was a Supervisor for RH Venable Oil Company. He went to school at Gaston Elementary which was a school built with oil money for families who had children in grades K-12.

R.B. grew up most of his childhood in Selman City and attended Gaston Elementary until the 10th grade when his family moved to Athens, TX. There, he graduated high school. At both schools he made life-long friends that he has stayed in contact with until the very end.

R.B. served a 2-year Mission in the Western Central States Mission which included Wyoming and Montana for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After serving as a missionary he honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed in San Diego, California. He served from 1965 to 1969.

R.B. attended and graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. During his last year of college he went to a western dance where he met Lena.

R.B. said the best decision he ever made was marrying the love of his life Lena. They were married in 1969 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple for all time and eternity. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in August 2019.

As a new married couple they moved to The Venable Valley View Ranch in Athens, TX, there he worked as rancher on a 3,000 acre cattle ranch where his love for animals blossomed. In July of 1970 they packed up and moved with their new-born daughter to Aubrey, TX where they had their remaining seven children. Here in Aubrey, he was an entrepreneur and opened Pennington Tire and Farms.

In 1979 he built their forever home in which they raised their eight children and taught them to serve others and love the Lord. R.B’s home was Christ centered, filled with patience and brotherly kindness. Their home always had open doors to family and friends. In his 51 years in Aubrey, he provided a loving, humble and faithful life to his wife and children.

R.B. loved being surrounded by his 22 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way. He loved each and every one of his grandchildren unconditionally, each in their very own special way. He loved including them in farm work and teaching them the gospel.

R.B. loved his Savior Jesus Christ and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. At church he served many callings; Counselor in the bishopric, High Priest Group Leader and one of his favorite callings was as a nursery leader with his wife and one of his daughters.
