Clara caught tuberculosis when whe stayed overnight with one of her friends. There was no medicine for tuberculosis at the time. She died at the age of 19 years and 5 days. The following poem was on the remembrance card at her funeral.

Thy gentle voice now is hushed,
Thy warm true heart is still,
And on thy young and innocent brow
Is resting Death's cold chill.

Thy hands are clasped upon thy breast
We have kissed by lovely brow.
And in our aching hearts we know
We have no darling now.
