Obituary:
Bishop Ted Gera Thomas, Sr., General Board Member of the Church of God In Christ, Inc., Prelate of the Historical First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Virginia, Pastor of New Community Temple COGIC, Inc. and St. Stephen's COGIC, Inc., received his heavenly reward and entered into the presence of His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2020 while in his home.
Bishop Ted Gera Thomas, Sr. was born to the late Elder Simuel Thomas, Sr. and Mother Nancy Thomas on October 19, 1935 in Raeford, North Carolina.
Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. joined Community COGIC in 1957 "Twin Pines" and was ordained in 1959. He served as the Associate Pastor of Clifton's Tabernacle COGIC, Inc. in Norfolk, Virginia from 1963 to 1966 and pastored Herald of His Coming COGIC from 1984 to 1989. Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. was the Pastor of both New Community Temple COGIC, Inc. in Portsmouth, Virginia where he served for almost 53 years and St. Stephens COGIC, Inc. in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he served for over 29 years. He has also served as Central District Superintendent, Administrative Assistant and Assistant Overseer to his former Prelate Bishop David C. Love, State Y.P.W.W. President, Editor and Founder of the Y.P.W.W. reporter, and State Sunday School Superintendent.
Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. was appointed seventh in succession as prelate of the Virginia First Jurisdiction COGIC, Inc. in 1984 and served in this position for almost 36 years. Under his leadership, the Jurisdiction grew from eighteen churches to more than fifty in only a few short years. Noting his loyalty to God and his leadership, Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. caught the attention of the presiding Bishop J. O. Patterson and the General Board, and in 1984 the Board of Bishops elected him to serve for five consecutive terms (20 years) as it's Secretary. In 1986, Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. was also selected to represent the COGIC on the Board of Directors of the Congress of National Black Churches.
In 2009, Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. was appointed as an Associate Justice of the National Judiciary Board. He was also appointed Assistant Dean of the Presiding Bishop's Episcopal Leadership Academy in 2009. Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. has also served as a Commissioner of Operations for the International Holy Convocation, member of the National Publishing Board, and member of the committee to renovate the Lelia Mason Home. He was a strong supporter of Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. as an unprecedented and historic show of support for the non-profit organization in the Save African's Children Project. During the 2012 General Assembly of the Church of God In Christ, Inc., Bishop Ted G. Thomas Sr., was elected to the General Board and served for two terms.
Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. was a long-time educator. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Norfolk State University and his Master of Science Degree from Hampton University. He served as an Assistant Principal for the Norfolk Public School System for eleven years. He also taught Mathematics at Norfolk State University for five years. He achieved a Doctorate of Divinity Degree from Trinity Hall College and further study from Moody Bible Institute, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and The College of William and Mary.
Bishop Ted G. Thomas, Sr. served more than 20 years on the Advisory Committee for the Bank of the Commonwealth as Board Chairman of the Cedar Road Branch and Vice-Chairman of the Advisory Board for all 21 branches. He assisted other pastors, jurisdictions and reformations in obtaining financing for church expansions. He was the proprietor of the CMC Holdings, LLC. Carver Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
Preceding his death, were four brothers, Mr. Simuel Thomas, Jr., Minister Willie M. Thomas, Deacon Harold Thomas, Sr., Mr. Homer Thomas and two sisters, Ms. Bettie Thomas, and Pastor Hattie Thomas-Butts.
He leaves to cherish his wife of over 63 years, Mother Charletta Virginia Clifton Thomas., and his legacy of integrity, faith, and love to his six sons; Ted G. Thomas Jr., Elder Christopher B. Thomas, Bishop Marc A. Thomas, Sr. (Naomi), Elder Charles H. Thomas, Sr. (Kim), Jonathan D. Thomas, Reuben G. Thomas; one sister Zelma Antoinetta Thomas-Harrington. He also leaves to continue his legacy, his nine grandchildren, Charles Jr. (CJ), Emmanuel (E-man), Marc Jr. (MJ), Kiara (Kia), Evan, Aaron, Ted J. C. (TJ), Na'Ami, and William (Marson), and one great grandson, Bryson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church family, and friends.
