When Dallas did the paperwork to apply for a new headstone he had to research civil war records and he found: the civil war records and Thomas's application in his own handwriting on his enlistment and his pension was FETHERSON. The people who did the headstone said that over 50% of military headstones have the wrong spelling!..(Note the old headstone had it spelled Featherstone!) Anyway--Thomas himself had dropped the "a" evidently.
Thomas Fetherston new headstone was due to his Great Grandson Dallas Roy MATHEWS and his Great Granddaughter Dora Lorene MATHEWS OLBERT filling out an application to get their Great Grandfather name corrected on his headstone by the V.A.
