"Alex Chisholm, Mine Figure, Dies in Crash

Grand Rapids, Minn. -- Alex D. Chisholm, 78, retired Duluth, Minn., mining executive, was killed Thursday in a head-on car-truck collision while returning from a duck hunting trip.

Aitkin County authorities said Chisholm was alone in his car when it collided with a gasoline truck on Hwy. 2, about eight miles from Floodwood, Minn.

His wife and son, returning from the hunting trip in a second car, reached the crash scene minutes later.

Driver of the truck, Ed Ylitalo, 38, Floodwood, suffered bruises, officers said.

Chisholm ended a 55-year career in the mining industry when he retired Dec. 31, 1958, as managing partner of Pickands Mather and Co.

He played a key role in devolopment of the company's Erie Mining Co. taconite plant at Hoyt Lakes, Minn.

He was born in Bessemer, Mich., and began his mining career in 1903.. In 1927 he was named manager of Pickands Mather's Michigan operations, and in 1931 moved to Duluth as assistant general manager of mines for the firm's Lake Superior district.

He became general manager of mines in 1937 and a managing partner in 1942. The company manages five mines in Minnesota as well as the taconite plant.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Pilgrim Congregational church, Duluth, with burial in Duluth."
