Born July 8, 1927 in Airpoint, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Campbell and Louella Waldron Ballard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Edward "Eddie" Smith; her daughter, Tammy Smith Skaggs; four brothers, Henry Ike "Bunt" Ballard, Campbell Straton "Strat" Ballard, John Coles Ballard, and Patrick Whitney Ballard; five sisters, Anna Lea Mann, Nellie Gray "Nell" Long, Lilly Belle "Lil" Page, Hazel Grace Heath, and Fanny Lorene Ganoe; and one special niece, Evelyn Miller Eary.
Mrs. Smith worked at Alderson’s Store in Alderson, W.Va. for many years and was a homemaker. She graduated from Peterstown High School in Peterstown, W.Va. and was a member of the Alderson Presbyterian Church in Alderson. Mrs. Smith was an accomplished seamstress and artist. She especially loved children and always had candy for any visiting her home. She baked and decorated many birthday cakes over the years and sewed many costumes for children. Her Halloween decorations were phenomenal. Nobody loved a good joke more than Lucy Mae.
