Steve, my grandfather, was a great man. He loved his wife of 49 years, Sandy, his 2 children, and his 5 grandchildren so much. He always told us that family came first. He always knew how to make us laugh. To me, my sister, and my cousins, he was Pepaw. We love you Pepaw, we'll see you again soon.

He was born in the Southeast Dallas County community of Pleasant Grove, eventually annexed by the city of Dallas, on February 12, 1947 as the 2nd of 3 sons born to Lawrence and Joy (Williams) Barnhart. He had a rough childhood and was quite a troublemaker in his teen years. However, he overcame it and became a man who loved God, his family, his friends, and life. While working at the Republic National Bank Building in downtown Dallas, he fell in love with fellow employee Sandra Kay Walker. They soon began dating and were engaged by October. Steve and Sandy married at the young ages of 19 and 18 on December 2, 1966. Their wedding was attended by both of their extensive families. They eventually had 2 children, Jayson and Missy, and 5 grandchildren, Emma, Jack, Drew, Walker, and Morgan, who called him Pepaw. Steve loved each and every one of them so much. Steve's parents passed away in 1997 and 2013, respectively. Steve was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2011. However, he did not let his illness tarnish his happiness, and remained active and lived life to the fullest for the next 4 years. I remember the last time I saw Pepaw. He had been lingering for days, but he didn't go down without a fight. On the day of December 8, 2015, I had gone on a field trip for school. My mom picked me up from school that afternoon and told me Pepaw had died. It was a very painful time for all of us. My grandmother arranged a beautiful memorial service that he would've been proud of. Hundreds of family members and friends came to pay tribute to a great man. As difficult as it was, life had to go on, and we still talk about him to this day to make sure that his legacy is preserved. Fly high Pepaw, I love you with all of my heart.
