ADRIAN, Mich.
Shirley S. Dick, 84, of Adrian passed away after struggling with a variety of health concerns, Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center.
Shirley was born in Jerry City, Ohio, on April 9, 1926, the daughter of the late Ned and Vera (Ridgley) Garns. She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Wise.
On June 18, 1946, Shirley married Frank Dick in Indiana. Frank, Shirley’s husband of more than 63 years and her partner in community service, survives.
Shirley and Frank have known each other for 78 years, having met in the first grade. They graduated from Cygnet High School in 1944.
Shirley loved volunteering. While living in Ohio she served as the President for the Sylvania Garden Club, the Heirloomers’ Association and the Toledo Women’s Club. She was also a board member of the Maumee Valley Historical Society and a member of the Jerry City Rebekah Lodge #602.
Shirley and Frank moved to Adrian in 1982 and her passion for community service grew. Shirley was a member of the Bixby Medical Center Auxiliary, serving two terms as president. She was the president of the Michigan Hospital Association SW District and received the ProMedica Health Advocate of the Year in 2005. In 1994, Shirley and Frank were honored with the Maple Leaf Award. She was also awarded the Outstanding Community Volunteer by the NW Ohio Chapter of the National Philanthropy Association in 2009.
Shirley was an active volunteer for the Adrian Community Nursery where she also served on the Board. She was a member of PEO. Shirley was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of United Methodist Women. As editor of the Gleaner Forum Magazine, she made sure tasty recipes were included in each issue. She also volunteered at Gleaners, beautifying the grounds with floral plantings. Shirley was honored by the Michigan Fraternal Congress as Fraternalist of the Year.
Shirley and Frank have shared their conviction for learning with many throughout the years with college scholarships they have sponsored.
In addition to her husband, Shirley is survived by a daughter, Reide Garnett of Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Dick of Findlay, Ohio, and Marge Dick of Shippensburg, Pa., and numerous treasured nieces and nephews. She will be missed by a legion of friends.
A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Dawes and the Rev. Christopher Brundage officiating. Friends may visit the family at the Wagley Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service.
