Born in Lowell, Massachusetts; Joseph was the son of the late John J. and Delia (Copley) Harrington. Dr. Harrington spent his career in public education. He began as a teacher in Warren, MA. When he was named Principal of Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, he and Helen moved their young family to Rehoboth, MA. They would raise their seven children there and called Rehoboth home until a few years ago. Dr. Harrington would eventually become the Superintendent of the D-R Regional School District. Upon his retirement, he continued his career in education as the Executive Director at Project Contemporary Competitiveness. His career in education spanned over 50 years. Joseph proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II.
In addition to his wife Helen, Joseph leaves behind his children; Joseph Harrington Jr and his wife Margaret of Reading, John Harrington and his wife Susan of Sagamore Beach, James Harrington and his wife Susan of Weymouth, Marla Sohegan and her husband William of Rehoboth, Jeffrey Harrington of North Providence, Justin Harrington and his partner Alice of West Warwick, and Melissa Grew and her husband Paul of North Reading. Joseph was lovingly known as "Cope" to his ten grandchildren: Joshua, John, Jason, Catherine, Parker, Jeremy, Kevin, Delia, Bridget and Deirdre, as well as ten great-grandchildren. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his siblings; John Harrington, Martina Grover, Paul Harrington, and Grace Landry.
In accordance with his wishes, Joseph's body was donated to the University of Central Florida. A Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date. Burial to follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne.
