French composer. He studied music at the Conservatoire de Paris, started his career composing scores for theatrical productions, and worked for twelve years as permanent composer at the Theatre National Populaire. He moved into soundtrack composition, winning three Academy awards for best movie score: Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Dr. Zhivago (1965) and A Passage to India (1984). Other well-known films for which he wrote scores include: The Man Who Would Be King (1976), Witness (1984); Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Mosquito Coast (1986), Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Dead Poets Society (1989), Ghost (1990), and Fearless (1993). His last score was for the television mini-series, Uprising (2001). Six other scores were nominated for Academy awards over the course his career of more than 150 soundtracks, and incidental music for the theater and concert pieces. He also won four Golden Globes, two BAFTA Awards, and a Grammy Award for Fatal Attraction (1987).
