Jack Joe Burke, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018. He was born on April 19, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas, and was the only child of Enoch Joseph Burke and Anna Louise Zunker Burke. Jack graduated from New Braunfels High School, and was the first in his family to attend and graduate from college, earning a B.A. in Mechanical Engineering from The Rice Institute, a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Methodist University, and a J.D from the University of Tulsa College of Law. Shortly after graduation from Rice, Jack served as a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Jack married his high school sweetheart, Susan Dee Richter Burke, on June 25, 1960 and was the proud father of Richter Darryl Burke and Shannon Linn Burke Miller. He loved his seven grandchildren very much, and was affectionately known to them as “Pops.”

Jack was a Professional Engineer, an FAA Pilot Examiner and an Aviation Lawyer whose practice of law focused on product liability, FAA and NTSB hearings and aviation accident investigation, reconstruction and litigation. He was admitted to the State Bars of Texas and Oklahoma and was licensed to practice before the U.S. District Courts in Oklahoma, Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Jack was a member of the Tulsa, Oklahoma State and American Bar Associations, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers Association, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Legal Services, and the National Transportation Safety Board Bar Association.

Jack’s aviation experience was extensive. He held every civilian aviation license, including an FAA license as an Airline Transport Pilot (Multi-Engine Land and DC-3) and Commercial Pilot (Airplane Single Engine Land & Sea, Glider, Rotorcraft-Helicopter) and was an FAA Flight Instructor and Ground Instructor. He flew his own private plane and was a member of The Quiet Birdmen, an elite national organization of skilled pilots. He was also a licensed Ham Radio operator, and spent hours chatting across the world with fellow Ham Radio friends.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; son Darryl and daughter-in-law Nancy; daughter Shannon and son-in-law Bruce; and seven grandchildren, Sarah Miller, Chandler Burke, Meredith Burke, Mark Miller, Trevor Burke, Spencer Burke and Oliver Burke. He was a devoted father and husband, and will be remembered for his love of family, witty anecdotes, quick and powerful mind and love of flying.

Honoring Pops as pallbearers are Chandler Burke, Trevor Burke, Spencer Burke, Oliver Burke, Mark Miller, Darryl Burke, Bruce Miller, and David Hartmann.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 at First United Methodist Church of New Braunfels with a graveside military service immediately following at Comal Cemetery.

Donations in Jack’s name can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
