James F. "Jim" Vinson, 101, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Summitville, to William and Ida (Trout) Vinson, and has lived here all of his lifetime.
In his early years Jim farmed and worked at the Summitville Canning factory from 1938 to 1957. He then worked at Kraft food, which later became the Crystal Dairy from 1958 to 1967. Jim then went to work at Owens-Corning in Gas City in 1968 until his retirement in 1981.
Jim was devoted to his community and was always supportive of anything that made Summitville a better place to live. He was devoted to his Lord by being a long-standing member of the First Christian Church in Summitville and had served as a Deacon for a number of years. He was always known to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Jim loved his family dearly. He was especially proud of and devoted to his five grandchildren, always making sure there were cards and gifts on their birthday and at Christmas time. Jim's warm smile will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered.
He is survived by his son, David A. Vinson of Summitville; daughter-in-law, Pat (Bob) Richards of Gas City; grandchildren, Steve (Ann) Vinson of Colon, Michigan, Phil (Erin) Vinson of Yorktown, Misty (Chad) Smalley of Leesburg, Kim (Mike) Allen of Carmel, and Patrick (Stacey) Vinson of Hagerstown; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Vinson in 2002; his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Coty) Vinson in 2010; brother, Harold "Pete" Vinson; and sister, Ruby Vinson.
Services honoring Jim's life, legacy and faith will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2020, at the Summitville First Christian Church, 712 E. Walnut St., with Pastor Nathan Lutterman officiating. Interment will follow in Vinson Memorial Cemetery, Summitville.
Friends may call at the church after noon Monday prior to the services.
