This is the obituary as printed in the Elkader Register & Argus newspaper, Thursday evening, April 10, 1913. However, it contains several errors that have been disproven by documents [see bracketed corrections]:
Mary Ann Wood died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Finnegan, five miles north of Colesburg, Iowa, on Saturday, April 5th, 1913, at 9:45 a.m., of paralysis, at the age of 84 years, three months and five days.
Mary Ann Boyce was born in Oswego, Kings County, N.Y., in the year 1829 [1828], and was united in marriage to Alexander Wood at Prairie du Chien, Wis., in 1847 [Clayton County, Iowa on April 19, 1845]. The following year they moved to Iowa and located in Read township and were engaged in farming until the year 1903 [1902], when death called her beloved husband and companion from her.
She remained on the farm with her son, J.F. Wood, until about eighteen months ago, since which time she has made her home with her daughter, where she passed away. She will be remembered as one of the last of the old settlers of Read township.
Deceased was a woman of excellent traits of character, generous and warm hearted. She was a truthful woman and a promise made by her was regarded sacred and never broken. She was of a kind disposition and always had a cheerful word for everyone, and a good neighbor, where hospitality reigned supreme and everyone was welcome. No neighbor ever wanted a favor or met with affliction that did not find in her true Christian sympathy and assistance.
From her girlhood she was a true and faithful Christian and her life was proof of an earnest devotion, as she lived so she died, true to the faith.
Deceased was the mother of eleven children, six of whom survive her, viz: Mrs. M. V. Wareham, of Timber Lake, S.D.; Mrs. Ida Finnegan, of Colesburg, Ia.; Mrs. Hannah Boyce, of Sentinel Butte, N.D.; J. F. Wood, of Read township, Ia.; A. A. Wood, of Timber Lake, S.D. and Mrs. Lilian Klinkle, of West Union, Iowa.
The funeral was held at the Congregational church at Elkader on Monday afternoon, Rev. R. G. Heddon officiating. Interment was in the East Side cemetery.

And tender memories of thee keep.
Thine in the Lord to rest for so,
He giveth His beloved sleep.
