Our precious “Little Mamaw”, Lela Mae Cogburn Walker, blessed with 90 years of a wonderful life, peacefully entered into her glorious place in Heaven on Monday July 27, 2020 with her loving daughters at her side.
Lela was born January 26, 1930 to the late Glenn Cogburn and the late Alice Cornelia Warren Cogburn. She had made her home in Haywood County all of her life and Lela was so very proud of being raised in the Chinquapin Community of Cruso. With her kind and sweet ways it was easy for Lela to make friends and everyone who knew her loved her. She was an employee of Lustar Dye and Finishing located in Asheville where she retired with many years of dedicated service. It was often said that Lustar had to close their plant to get Lela to retire! Her great love for her family was always evident when speaking to Lela. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren were her pride and joy and they all loved to spend time with their “Little Mamaw”, especially on Sundays when Lela cooked for hours preparing the most delicious meal that you have ever tasted. Everyone always felt welcome at Lela’s home and when friends and neighbors visited she treated them just as if they were part of her family. To bring a smile to Lela’s face one just had to say, “Let’s go out to eat’, that was one her favorite things to do. She loved beautiful flowers and one could find all types of plants and blooming blossoms around her home. On yard sale days Lela was up and ready to go and she managed to always find a bargain or a treasure. Her faith was an important part of her life and Lela was a devoted member of High Street Baptist Church. She was truly an example of a mother that gave her life to her family, always placing her family’s needs before her own. Our hearts are broken for her to leave us but we give thanks to our Lord above for giving her to us for 90 blessed years. “Our Little Mamaw” was a joy to each of us and this world is a better place because of Lela’s presence and love. She was the most wonderful mother that could ever be.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Walker who passed away in 2005; two daughters, Joey and Debby; step-daughters, Dorothy, Debbie and Marilyn ; grandchildren, Dylan and Tonya; brothers, Victor, Howard and Gary .
To hold her prceious memory in their hearts forever are her daughters, Carolyn Paige, Sandy Haney and her husband, Randy and Gale Evans and her husband, Craig; her son, Jeff “Smoky” Walker and a step-son, Edward Walker; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great –great-grandchildren that Lela loved deeply; a half -sister, Patsy Cogburn ; a step-sister, Barbara Price and a multitude of dear friends.
A graveside funeral service for family and friends to honor and celebrate the blessed life of Lela CogburnWalker will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pastor Kerry Lathrop will be officiating. Her grandsons and family will be serving as pallbearers.
