Beloved Citizen For More Than 23 Years Succumbs Following Extended Illness.

William Oliver Allen, beloved citizen, of this community for the past 23 years, died at his home here Friday morning, after an illness lasting eight months. He was 73 years of age last October 30, and had enjoyed excellent health and was an active worker until his recent illness. He began railroad work 57 years ago when but a youth of 16, and lived in various sections of the South prior to his coming to Winona in 1910 as an employee of the Southern Railway, now the Columbus and Greenville Railway. He had been awarded a pension by the C. & G. only a short time before his death.

Ha was a native of Tennessee, near Chattanooga, and in 1885 married Miss Jennie Newman, of Athens, Tenn., who survives him. Of the children that blessed their union, three daughters and two sons are living: namely, Mrs. L. C. Mackey, of Newbern, Tenn.; Mrs. Raymond Brown, of Dayton, Texas; Miss Ruby Allen, of Winona and Belzoni; C. W. Allen, of Fairbanks, La.; and J. Edward Allen, of Winona. Seven grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. A. P. Hays, of Dayton, Tenn., also survive him.

The deceased had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for many years, and had taken an active part in the work of the local Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon from 1916 to 1923, and as a ruling elder from 1932 until his death. He was also an active member of the Masonic fraternity.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock in the first Presbyterian Church, with his pastor, the Rev. Horace L. Villee, officiating. The elders and deacons of the church served as honorary pallbearers. Interment was made in Oakwood cemetery following services at the grave by Winona Lodge No. 48, F. & A. M., according him burial with full Masonic honors.
