Left to cherish his memory is his loving family that includes three daughters, Cora H. Brown, Margaret H. Forney and Anthany H. Lipford, all of Lenoir; two sons, Sherman Eugene Horton and Wallace Elgin “Wally” Horton (Kimberly Witherspoon) all of Lenoir; 15 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-laws, Betty Witherspoon and Clara Mae Pearson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; a faithful foster son, Donald H. Banner; his best friend, Ronald Beane; a special friend and neighbor, Elder Robert Hayes and other friends.
Mr. Horton accepted Christ at an early age at Harper’s Chapel United Methodist Church, (now known as New Covenant United Methodist Church) where he was a faithful lifetime member, a trustee, Church treasurer, a member of the Men’s and Gospel Choir for over thirty years. He was also a faithful member of the Men’s Choir of St. Paul AME Church.
He attended Freedman High School and retired from Broyhill Furniture Main Office as the Mail Clerk for 43 years. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Carolina Panthers.
He was a pillar in the Bushtown Community where he sat on his porch or inside by his picture window. He was known to share his time sitting on the porch with his family and friends, as his cousin stated, “waving, smiling and doing nothing”.
On his 99th birthday, he had a “drive-by” parade that included the NC State Highway Troop F, the Lenoir Police Department, the Caldwell County Sheriff Office, the Lenoir Fire Department, The Valmead Fire Department, the Caldwell County Emergency Medical Services, Caldwell County Emergency Management Services, the Lenoir News-Topic, WHKY and family and friends.
He was honored to be presented the key to the city by the Honorable Joseph Gibbons, the Mayor of Lenoir.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 5:00pm in the Harpertown Community under the open shelter (across from the former Harpers Chapel United Methodist Church). Rev. Myer Dahn will be officiating. A private interment will be held at the Harpertown Community Cemetery.
Serving as Pallbearers will be his Grandsons and the Flower Girls will be his Granddaughters.
Because of Covid-19, the family asks that you please wear a mask and bring a chair. Social distancing will be practiced.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Carolina Caring, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.
