Joel “Joe” Truman Johnson, age 80 of Winchester, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at St. Thomas West in Nashville. A native of Franklin County, he was born in Sewanee on February 5, 1940 to the late Charlie W. and Gladys May (Rousey) Johnson. Joe was a veteran of the United States Navy and was retired from Colonial Bread Company, where he had been employed for over twenty-five years. An avid sportsman, Joe played baseball for twenty years in the Sewanee League. He also enjoyed cheering for University of Tennessee sports teams and the Atlanta Braves, as well as golfing and fishing. Joe was a dedicated member of Winchester First Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Johnson, and Jackie Johnson. Joe is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Jean Johnson of Winchester; children, Joey (Donna) Johnson of Winchester, Carol (David) Knies of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Lesli (Brian) Moore of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Chesley (Nathan) Glassco, Alex Johnson, Sloan Moore, and Zane Moore; and siblings, Ruby Johnson, Buddy Johnson, Betty Johnson, Jim Johnson, Johnny Johnson, and Judy Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. Private services are planned with burial at Eastern Star Cemetery. The register book and memorial cards will be available under the carport of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home from 10:00-11:00 am on Friday, July 24, 2020. An attendant will be available to assist you.
