JoAnne Waddelow Cook, 84, passed away on April 23, 2020 at home in Des Moines. A private family funeral service will be held at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd., Clive, on Monday, April 27, 2020 and private family burial immediately following at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. The family is planning a regular memorial service at a later date (to be determined).

JoAnne was born on January 31, 1936 to Walter William Waddelow & Dorothy Mae Marston Waddelow in Mount Morris, Illinois. She graduated from Mt. Morris High School (Class of 1954) and attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois before transferring to Drake University, where she was a proud graduate in the class of 1958.

She was a professional interior decorator, working for Ahern-Pershing in Des Moines (reportedly the first female interior decorator ever there) and later as an interior design consultant. In 1961 she married Harold D. Cook, branching into the roles of homemaker and loving mother to her three sons.

For many years JoAnne was active with the Drake Alumni Association and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was an enthusiastic and long-time supporter of Friends of Iowa Public Television (Iowa PBS) and volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Iowa Chapter. She enjoyed membership in the Des Moines Color Film Club along with her husband Harold.

JoAnne loved living in Iowa – especially the Des Moines area – and enjoyed time with family and friends, road trips, outdoor gardens, painting and sketching, collecting antiques and traveling. A 1990 trip through Europe was a particular highlight, as she appreciated the art and beauty there. She was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Church in West Des Moines and enjoyed the times she was called on to read scripture as part of church services.

She will be greatly missed by her three sons (Ronald and wife Glenda, Edward and wife Caroline, and Russell), six grandchildren (Chad, Kyle, Henry, Kayla, Kaylee and Samuel), her brother (Darrell and wife Donna) and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold in 2009 (married 47 years), sister Fern (in 2002) and brother Don (in 2014).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org) or the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org/iowa).
