SAD DEATH OF WILLIAM JESSE BURTON

Death Results From Accident on
Merry Go Round at Tarkio last Saturday

William Jesse Burton, the fifth son of Frank and Mary Burton was born four miles northwest of Bethany, Mo. July 18,1887 and died at Tarkio, Mo. July 3, 1915, aged 27 years 11 months and 20 days.
He leaves to mourn his sudden departure, father, mother, seven brothers and a host of other relatives and friends. His brothers are Hugh, Arthur, Girt, Jephtha, John, Macey, and Robert. Two sisters and Two brothers preceded him to the Great Beyond.
Jesse was reared to manhood in the neighborhood where he was born and the large congregation of relatives and friends testify as to the esteem and respect in which he was held by all that knew him. He was a young man of starling character, never was he known to conduct himself in any other way than a manly manner. When other boys were inclined to be quarrelsome or boisterous he always used his influence for peace and quietness. With him truthfulness and rightiousness were supreme virtues.
While he never made any profession of religion, He always respected the House of God and religious people. He was always thoughtful of the comfort and pleasure of his parents and brothers. His cheerful disposition and kind words often helped them along the tough uneven pathway of life.
The last morning he left home his mother admonished him to be careful, but he was the picture of health and in the prime of manhood. He looked upon his mother with a pleasant smile and told her not to worry.
On July 3, at Tarkio, Mo., while the swing was running, Jesse climbed onto the upper part to tighten a tap. While up there he became entangled in such a way as to cut off both legs above the knees. This happened about 11:00. His parents at Bethany were notified by telegraph and his mother, brother Jephtha, cousin Ralph Lynch, and Mrs Woolsey started for Tarkio in a auto but as it rained on them for about thirty miles making the roads almost impassable for a car, they did not reach Tarkio until 10:30 that night. about 30 minutes after his spirit had taken its flight. Three doctors and a host of friends did all that medical science and loving hands could do to perpetuate life, but the loss of blood was so great that death was inevitable. Two brothers, John and Macey, also Alvin Woolsey, and John and Marshall Howell were with him when the accident occurred.
His body was brought Monday to Bethany, where a large number of family and friends followed the remains to the Oakland Church. After a short service by the writer, the remains were laid to rest in the Oakland Cemetary
