Famous Brooklands racing driver and Chief Test Pilot for Fairey Aviation. Flight Lieutenant Christopher Stainbank Staniland RAF was born in Finchley, Middlesex, son of Geoffrey and Millicent Staniland. Winner of the 1931 2x12hr Brooklands race in an MG. Was relief driver for Captain George Eyston (but did not drive) in September 1935 at Utah when he broke the World Land 24hr Record by driving a Rolls Royce car 3,372 miles in 24hr. Involved with the Multi-Union project in 1938. He had a long and active flying career with many narrow escapes. In 1925 he was attached to the British High Speed Flight from which pilots for the 1929 Schneider Trophy Races were chosen. As the Chief Test Pilot for Fairey Aviation, he was killed when his Fairey Firefly broke up in mid air over Sindlesham, Berkshire in 1942.
