The Rev. John Marshall Garten Jr., 88, Route 1, Shady Spring, died at 8 p.m. Sunday in a local hospital after a long illness.
Born in October, 1880, at Meadow Creek, he was a son of the late John M. and Frances Gwinn Garten. A retired Baptist minister and farmer, he was a former pastor of churches at Forest Hill, Marie Baptist, Hinton, Sandstone, and Brooks. His first wife, Clara Bragg Garten, preceded him in death in 1930.
He is survived by his second wife, Della Kincaid Garten; two sons, Herman F. Garten of Beckley and Leonard D. Garten with the Air Force in Columbus, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Mona) Fox, Shady Spring, Mrs. Emmett (Ora) Hudson, Marie, Mrs. William (Opal) Bennett, Binghampton, N.Y., and Mrs. Sherman (Ruby) Harless, St.Albans; a brother, G. H. Garten, Shady Spring; a sister, Mrs. Lillie Williams, Hinton and 19 grandchildren.
The body is at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
