North Stonington - Sheila J. (Zellers) Dolan, 67, of North Stonington, passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at home with her family and dogs.

Born in Reading, Pa., she was the only child of the late William and Carolyn (McFarland) Zellers. She graduated from Reading High School in 1961 and from Kutztown University in 1965.

On Aug. 30, 1963, she married Peter J. Dolan, who survives her.

Sheila made every new house a home during 30 years as a Navy wife. She had a long career as an editor and writer, most recently as editor of the award-winning "Australian Shepherd Journal." Prior to her ten-year stint at the Journal, she was an editor at the Bureau of Business Practice in Waterford, a food columnist for the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., and a children's book author.

Sheila enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, and lazy summer days by the pool with her kids and grandkids. She was a self-taught gourmet chef, designed beautiful flowerbeds, grew all kinds of vegetables, and devoured piles of books, especially mysteries. She hated to fly but loved to travel, and she spoke fluent French and Italian. Her greatest joy was training her dogs and watching Pete work with them at agility shows and herding trials.

In addition to her husband of 47 years, Sheila is survived by a son, Sean Dolan and his partner, Laura Evans, of North Stonington; and daughters, Maggie Ward and her husband, Richard, of Old Lyme, Jennifer Bilbe and her husband, Jason, of New Orleans, La., and Bridget Dolan of Bogota, Columbia. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Geoffrey and Patrick Dolan, Spencer, Thomas, and Alison Ward, and Lyle, Devin, Peter, and Cate Bilbe; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Keith and Carol Glaes of Missoula, Mont.; nieces, Gillian and Samantha Glaes of Missoula; and numerous cousins. In addition, Sheila is survived by her four-legged kids, Annie, Powder, Dewey, Ohlee, and Nix. Her forever dog, Gridley, predeceased her.

Sheila's family would like to thank Dr. Robert Legare and his staff for giving us the gift of two wonderful years and the staff of 4E at Women & Infants for making Sheila comfortable enough to come home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toby's Foundation, PO Box 7321, Laguna Nigel CA 92607; the Australian Shepherd Health & Genetics Institute, 730 E. Weldon Ave., Fresno CA 93701-6135; or the Breast Health Center at Women & Infants Hospital, 101 Dudley St., Providence RI 02905.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, followed by a celebration of her life at 4 p.m. at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, 51 Williams Ave., Mystic. Burial will be private.
