Alfred was Killed in action during the second Battle of Guadalcanal on 15 Nov. 1942, when the battleship South Dakota (BB 57) sustained 42 major caliber hits from the Imperial Japanese Navy. He is honored with a Purple Heart, Good Combat Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
