Graveside services for George Merrill Hicks, 87, of Jackson, Mississippi will be held on Wednesday, July 29 at 11 a.m. in Cedar Lawn Cemetery at 2434 West Capitol Street in Jackson.

Mr. Hicks died Saturday, July 25, at University of Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Oct. 5, 1932 in Jackson to Francis Henry (Frank) Hicks and Bessie Lane Hicks. The Hicks family lived in Pearl.

George was a graduate of Pearl High School, where he was active in music and dramatic arts and where he was a cheerleader. He continued his education at Louisiana State University, where he earned both a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Voice Performance and was a member of the “Golden Band from Tiger Land” Marching Band. He later pursued additional post-graduate studies at Indiana University.

Active in vocal and choral music and theater and drama over the course of his life, George made a difference in the lives of countless students while he served on the faculties of Kentucky Wesleyan University, the University of Nebraska – Kearney, and Indiana University. He was for many years a private vocal coach and tutor as well as a gifted singer in his own right.

George enjoyed travel, opera, and classical music. After suffering a stroke, George spent his final days in the loving care of Manhattan Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Jackson.

Mr. Hicks is survived by several cousins including his guardian, Sid Salter, and a group of loyal former students and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in his honor to the Galloway United Methodist Church Chancel Choir.
