Ray was born January 24, 1938 in Burke County to the late Nathaniel William Amos and Clessie Deal Amos.
Ray was an avid reader and loved to spoil his grandchildren.
He is survived by one son, Ray Amos Jr. of South Carolina; one daughter, Kimberly Amos Haylock of Valdese; five grandchildren, Billy Amos and wife Beth of Indiana, Judith VanDyke and husband Ashley of Gastonia, Crystal Dula and husband Steward of Lenoir, Katherine Hubbard and husband Matthew of Valdese, and Stephanie Haylock of Valdese; eight great-grandchildren, Taylor Amos, Trent Amos, Adam VanDyke, Alex VanDyke, Anna VanDyke, Natalie Hubbard, and two more boys on the way.
Services will be held privately, at a later date, by the family.
